A 16-year-old surfer was attacked by a shark near Pohoiki Boat Ramp around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

An ambulance arrived about 19 minutes after the call came in, and found the boy being treated by lifeguards on the scene, according to a release from the Hawaii County Fire Department.

The patient told paramedics he had been surfing at the “Dead Trees” area when he was attacked from behind by a “gray colored shark, about 8 feet long.”

The patient “sustained multiple lacerations and puncture wounds to lower extremities,” the release stated. He was treated and transported to Pahoa Fire Station, where he was transferred to an air ambulance and transported to Hilo Medical Center’s Emergency Room.

A second county rescue helicopter performed an aerial search of the water but found no signs of a shark.
